REPRESENTATIVE CASE STUDIES:

CASE STUDY 1: Design and Development of valuable tool that utilizes the Internet portal and collaboration technology and resources to empower communities to reduce substance abuse among their youth

PURPOSE: Citizens concerned about drug abuse problems can now harness the power of the Internet to improve their community’s environment, decrease substance abuse problems, and make a real difference in their neighborhoods.

NETE CONTRIBUTIONS: Working for a major health communications company, NETE assisted in the complete designing, developing and launching/maintenance after launch of a unique and practical Website to empower community-based organizations and concerned community members to prevent substance abuse. We worked closely with industry experts that developed the content for the portal. Also coordinated focus groups while designing the portal application.

OUTCOME: A valuable tool that utilizes the Internet portal and collaboration technology and resources to empower communities to reduce substance abuse among their youth. The Website is an electronic prevention community organizer and provides a wealth of information about environmental approaches to substance abuse prevention. Environmental approaches to prevention involve changing policies, regulations, laws, and social norms to affect the access, availability, and use of substances in the community. However, the end product is more than a Website. Rather a portal, designed to foster the development of an online community wherein community members seek and receive help, and experts and peers provide technical assistance. Also, the portal also contains a wealth of resources: a resource guide, a support tutorial, a system of "peers and coaches," and a conference corner. Examples of environmental approaches addressed include strengthening the enforcement of existing legal regulations of alcohol and tobacco sales to youth; changing community social policies to strengthen regulations of alcohol and tobacco sales to youth; and using social marketing techniques and the media to increase social disapproval of alcohol and tobacco sales to minors. An especially unique feature of the portal is an online Support Tutorial, is designed to guide individuals and programs through the steps required to implement and evaluate environmental approaches to substance abuse prevention, from identifying specific problems to be addressed to evaluating the effectiveness of their efforts.

CASE STUDY 2: Support, Verify and Consolidate Thousands of Women's Health Related Contacts Mailing List Database Project using the Internet Web Technology

PURPOSE: Support, Verify and Consolidate Thousands of Women's Health Related Contacts Mailing List Database Project using the Internet Web Technology.

NETE CONTRIBUTIONS: Working collaboratively with a major Healthcare Information Technology integration firm we performed – interactive Web Software development, database design, and Web site design, development and support and related project management activities in support of verifying and consolidating the current thousands of national and international women's research related mailing list database of contacts and research interests directory that had been not possible to create and update earlier for years without the power of the internet/Web due to the high cost associated. Our solution included researching and then generating email mailing lists and sending automated email campaigns (up to 3 iterations of emails) and designing standards based post cards and post card mailing lists – requesting users to update their mailing and contact information (name, email, address, detailed research interests etc) using the custom developed Web site, via email or via mailing in postcards. Assist with updating the database with the received emails and post cards from the contacts lists. Approximately thousands of records were scrubbed/updated using Google and other databases to create the initial database.

OUTCOME: An up to date national and international directory and electronic mailing list of thousands of women's health research contacts and their research interests and a self-help Web site for these contacts to keep their information updated.

CASE STUDY 3: Edutainment CD-ROM to teach 12-18 year-olds with cancer about their illness, its treatment, side effects, potential late effects, and to provide coping skills to help support them through this challenge

PURPOSE: The purpose of CD-ROM is to teach 12-18 year-olds with cancer about their illness, its treatment, side effects, potential late effects, and to provide coping skills to help support them through this challenge.

NETE CONTRIBUTIONS: Working with the prime contractor and team developing the content we assisted with the creative design, user experience centric design and build out of the interactive CD-ROM on time and within budget. Also built Windows and Mac compatible versions and user self installation scripts.

OUTCOME: Was an award winning CD-ROM product. The CD-ROM provides an interesting “edutainment” way to learn about solid tumors; no such interactive educational tool existed before the creation of this CD-ROM. When the CD-ROM opens, one can select from 7 different TV screens set up much like a network station; each show represents a different aspect of living with cancer. Music, video, voiceover, interactive games, animation, and cool graphics were incorporated to engage the young users.
