Web Site Compliance

There are a number of methods that web site designers can use to ensure their web sites are accessible.

Firstly, comprehensive guidelines are available which, if followed, will ensure accessibility. However, following the guidelines and detecting violations is not always easy because some points require subjective judgment. It is made easier by automatic testing tools, which check web pages against the accessibility guidelines and report violations. Although these tools are very useful, they are limited in the violations they can detect. Also, interpreting their output and solving the problems requires knowledge of HTML and accessibility issues. Therefore, expert input is essential. We as an accessibility expert are familiar with accessibility guidelines, the nature of disabilities, assistive technologies used by disabled people, and the technologies used to create web sites.

Accessibility should not imply access only for people with disabilities, but access for all, across many barriers. These include access to high-speed modems, international access, English-as-a-second-language issues, disability concerns, teaching and learning styles, and anything else that either inhibits or enhances a student's access to educational materials.

Designing for a broad range of accessibility ensures pages that are robust, standard, and accessible to a large and diverse group of users. We keep in mind that not all web page visitors are using the standard graphical browsers. They may use Adaptive Technologies such as screen readers or text-based browsers, have their browser graphics turned off, or may not be able to use, or have access to a mouse or keyboard. Some users also have physical or cognitive disabilities that impact their use of a web page. Users may now use cell phones or audio devices from their cars to access the web. We not only ensure that your information will be accessible to the disabled, but also to those using old, alternate, or emerging technologies.
